Save the Children helps families and children affected by the floods

Save the Children is implementing a project to help families and children in Ulaanbaatar’s Bayanzurkh district, one of the areas hardest hit by the recent floods.

The flooding resulted in four casualties, damaging homes of hundreds of families, electrical cables, roads, properties of many private businesses, and over 100 vehicles. Among the affected population are 609 children aged 0-18 years old and 27 people with severe disabilities.

To help the affected communities of 21st, 27th and 29th Khoroos of Bayanzurkh District, Save the Children launched a humanitarian project at the City Hall of 29th Khoroo of Bayanzurkh District on August 31, 2023, and the first part of the humanitarian aid was distributed to the affected citizens and children before the start of the school season.

Bayan-Altai Luvsandorj, Country Manager and Representative of Save the Children, said, “Save the Children is pleased to be able to help the children of flood-affected families in Bayanzurkh district of Ulaanbaatar city. We hope that our humanitarian aid will help these children and their parents and give them the opportunity to go to school without worry. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Save the Children’s Global Emergency Seed Fund, Save the Children Korea, and Save the Children Japan for working with us and funding this relief at this urgent time.”

This humanitarian aid project provides school uniforms, bags, school supplies and sports shoes for school children, various toys and storybooks for kindergarten children and home-schooled preschoolers, and some supplies for families. Save the Children believes that children’s education should be provided continuously even in the event of a disaster or emergency. We are providing assistance to 203 children.

Ch. Batchimeg, a resident of 21st Khoroo in Bayanzurkh district, expressed her gratitude, “Our yard and house were affected by a very strong flood. Now my house is uninhabitable, so we are rebuilding it. We are a family of six with four children. All my children received school supplies, school uniforms and shoes today. This is a great support for my family. Thank you so much to Save the Children.”

Save the Children implements humanitarian aid programs to provide timely, quality humanitarian assistance to children, families, and herders in vulnerable groups affected by disasters and crises, and to help them prevent, prepare for, and overcome potential risks.
