Save the Children delivers 125,000,000 MNT in humanitarian aid to Sukhbaatar Province for Dzud risk reduction

Sukhbaatar Province, Mongolia (March 4, 2024) – Save the Children has provided humanitarian aid package worth 125 million MNT (equal to 37,000 USD) to the herder families and children affected by Dzud in Sukhbaatar Province, Eastern Mongolia.

The aid package was handed over to Sukhbaatar Province leadership and representatives of local herders. As part of the humanitarian response project, 500,000 MNT cash assistance was provided to 180 herding families in Khalzan, Tuvshinshiree, and Uulbayan soums, 17,440,000 MNT financial support for emergency response vehicle fuel and heavy-duty trucks tires worth 5,000,000 MNT to support the emergency response in the province.

In addition, Save the Children conducted a training on “Psychological First Aid for Children” for the staff of all school dormitories in the province. The training equipped dormitory staff with the knowledge and skills to support children’s emotional well-being during disasters and emergencies.

Bayan-Altai, Save the Children’s Country Manager and Representative in Mongolia, stated at the handover ceremony, “Our total contribution to Sukhbaatar Province amounts to MNT 125 million. We trust this assistance will bolster herder livelihoods and support them in overcoming Dzud risks.”

Iderbat, Governor of Sukhbaatar Province, expressed gratitude to Save the Children for their critical intervention during this natural disaster. He added, “The next challenge we face is the disposal and clearing of dead animals to prevent infectious diseases. We will prioritize addressing this issue.”

                                 

Myasuren, a herder from Uulbayan soum in Sukhbaatar Province who received cash assistance, shared his experience, “In my 60 years, I haven’t witnessed a winter this severe. Our family of eight previously owned over 300 animals, but due to Dzud, we are now left with around 100. This cash assistance is immensely helpful. We will use it to purchase fodder for our animals, food for our family, and other essential supplies.”

Save the Children has provided humanitarian support in Uvs, Zavkhan, Gobi-Altai, Uvurkhangai and Sukhbaatar provinces. This humanitarian project is generously funded by a collective contribution of USD 295,000 from the Start Network in the UK, the Save the Children International Humanitarian Fund, and Save the Children Japan.
