Strengthening the Child Protection System in Mongolia (2018-2022)
With funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Save the Children implemented the project “The strengthening and sustaining the child protection system in Mongolia” in 2018-2022 in partnership with the Authority for Family, Child, and Youth Development and Secretariat of Coordination Council for Crime Prevention in Mongolia. The project aimed to strengthen the child protection system and improve services while providing methodological support to the Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDT) on the enforcement of the Law on Child Rights, the Law on Child Protection and the Law on Combating Domestic Violence.
The project raised public awareness of child protection and built the capacity of local government Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDTs) to strengthen the child protection system and improve services in target areas of Ulaanbaatar and regional Mongolia.
“The strengthening and sustaining the child protection system in Mongolia” project was implemented in nine khoroos of three districts of Ulaanbaatar city as well as in Arkhangai and Dornod aimags. The project helped MDT members in target communities to improve their basic capacity and skills to respond to child protection concerns. Also, the MDT members are specialized in working on high-risk cases of violence against children.
A comprehensive set of training for the parents and caregivers in non-violent positive disciplining was conducted within the project and improved the skills of parents to communicate with their children. Moreover, the MDT members gained experience in organizing advocacy activities, traditional and social media to promote universal application Mongolia’s ban on corporal punishment in all contexts. As the primary protection unit in the local areas, the MDTs were involved in capacity building trainings of different levels and provided with methodological support on regular basis. As well, the manuals and guidelines developed by the project team and disseminated nationwide help MDT members in their daily operations. At the same time, the project has contributed to development of specific policies and decisions at the national level to ensure the sustainability of child protection system, strengthening inter-agency and inter-sectoral and vertical cooperation, and improving and sustaining the quality of child protection services provided by the MDTs.
