Disinfectants were given to flood-affected households

In a heartfelt response to the urgent needs of families and children affected by recent floods, Save the Children is diligently carrying out a humanitarian project. As part of our commitment to support the flood-stricken community in Bayanzurkh District, Save the Children organized a distribution event on September 15, 2023, at the 21st Khoroo of Bayanzurh District, where essential household disinfectants were provided to 250 affected households.

Bayan-Altai Luvsandorj, Country Manager and Representative of Save the Children Japan’s Mongolia Country Programme, expressed his sentiments on this occasion, stating,

“Today, we extend our assistance to families and children who have been adversely impacted by the floods. Prior to the commencement of the school year, we equipped more than 200 children with essential items such as school uniforms, sports shoes, bags, and school supplies. This time, our focus is on providing disinfectants to the families affected by the flood.

The heavy flooding in the region has escalated the risk of infectious diseases due to the contamination stemming from pit latrines. To combat this concern, Save the Children is distributing “Jiga,” an eco-natural disinfection solution tailored for household use. “Jiga” not only effectively neutralizes odors from pit toilets for 7-10 days but also facilitates the decomposition of organic compounds, reducing sludge buildup by up to 60 percent. This versatile solution finds application in household pit latrines as well as in flooded and polluted areas.

B. Tserenchimed, director of “Bio-Undraga” LLC, the producer of “Jiga” household disinfectant, expounded on the product’s attributes. He explained,

“Following a flood, household toilets often overflow, leading to bacterial contamination in the vicinity. ‘Jiga’ actively inhibits and eradicates disease-causing bacteria without posing any adverse effects on human health, as it is entirely chemical-free. The method of applying this product is simple.” Mr. Tserenchimed elaborated on the product’s features and advantages during the distribution event.

In a previous activity on August 31, 2023, Save the Children extended its support to over 200 school-age children by providing them with school uniforms, sports shoes, school bags, school supplies, and a range of toys and storybooks. This initiative is part of Save the Children’s unwavering commitment to assist vulnerable families and children during times of crisis.
