Severe sand and dust storms swept across the country from March 13 to 15, 2021, causing massive damage to people, animals and property across the country. It affected 154 soums of 16 provinces. More than 90 families were left homeless, more than 500 fences shattered, more than 130,000 head of livestock perished, and 10 people lost their lives. Within its humanitarian assistance program, Save the Children implemented a “Sandstorm Response” project in 2021 in the provinces of Arkhangai, Gobi-Altai, Dornod, Dundgovi, Sukhbaatar, and Uvurkhangai in Mongolia. The aim of the humanitarian assistance was to support herder families affected by the sandstorms, help them recover from the storm damage, and provide psychological first aid to children affected by the disaster. The project provided homes (gers) to 92 households, hygiene kits to 660 families and distributed 3,000 leaflets on psychological first aid.
