CHILD PROTECTION

The Child Protection Program of Save the Children supports and implements actions and activities to prevent and protect children – particularly for the most vulnerable children from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation. We provide rehabilitation services and methodological guidance and work with government to expand and consolidate the national child protection system.

Program Objectivity:
Save the Children has been a leading advocate for banning corporal punishment in all settings in Mongolia over the past decade. When the ban was included in new Child Protection legislation ratified by the Parliament in 2016, Mongolia became one of only 52 countries to achieve complete prohibition of corporal punishment. But there is more to do to change social attitudes and to ensure that policies and procedures are in place to enforce the laws.

Achievements in 2016

  • Facilitated Civil Society Organizations and children to prepare and present supplementary reports to the NCRC in Geneva in 2008 and 2016
  • Civil Society Organizations raised the issue in the media and lobbied policy makers about children’s experiences of violence, including physical or humiliating punishment
  • Supported children to participate in annual Spank Out Day 2006-16 to promote positive discipline
  • Conducted public media/awareness campaigns to change attitudes toward corporal punishment
  • Provided training in positive discipline to teachers and multi-disciplinary teams working in local government

Save the Children believes that all children have right to be protected from abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation, so that they can enjoy their rights for survival, development and participation.
